ABC - Plus 1.0

ABC Bright Little Eyes Plus is a straightforward, interactive app designed specifically for children with low vision or Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI). It emphasizes simplicity through tap, listen, and learn functionalities, tailored to accommodate the visual processing preferences often observed in children with CVI. Research indicates that these children tend to be less distracted by visual clutter and may recognize objects more readily when presented in favored colors such as red or yellow. In response, the app utilizes a minimalistic black or white background with high-contrast letters, numbers, and shapes in red, yellow, or blue.

The development of this app was motivated by personal observation of the challenges faced by children with visual impairments. Specifically, it was inspired by the experience with a family member who struggled to see and, consequently, found it difficult to learn. Guidance from a vision therapist emphasized the importance of encouraging the use of residual vision as an initial step. While more complex applications initially attracted his attention, he often found it difficult to focus on detailed visuals. Through experimentation, it was discovered that yellow on a black background provides the most effective contrast for him, facilitating better visual engagement.

Consistent repetition of simple visual stimuli using this color combination has begun to show promising results—not only in enabling him to use his vision more effectively but also in fostering learning. This journey transformed our outlook, giving rise to the realization that a child once perceived as unlikely to see well enough to learn could indeed become a ‘Bright Little Eye,’ highlighting the importance of targeted, accessible visual learning tools.
